Punakaiki Rocks
We stopped to this very popular site on the West Coast, as it was on our way. We heard that it’s quite spectacular during high tide… we missed the “show” but we saw the funny looking rocks! We also added a new bird to our collection, the Weka!
The “Far End” of the North Island
We really wanted to go to this very remote part of the island. It’s a long way from the main cities like Nelson or Motueka, and ends with a 44km gravel road… quite standard in New Zealand! Here are the places we liked most.
Wharariki Beach:
Nice bonus for us, definitely animal lovers: some cute little seal pups playing in front of us!
Paturau Beach:
Abel Tasman National Park
Anapai Bay:
We managed to get off the tourist trail in this hugely popular park, by skipping the “official” day hike north from Marahau (one of the South Island’s busiest walk) and walking from Totanarui instead. That was a success as we were alone, and arrived at the perfect Anapai Bay, where we stayed a while…
Rawhiti Cave:
Malborough Sounds
Last scenic stops on the South Island! Again, gravels, snaky roads… but the views were almost as good as on the Milford road, so it’s a good job we planned this.
Okiwi Bay, Elaine Bay:
French Pass:
Havelock:
We love food… so we obviously halted at the “Green Mussel Capital of the World”, and that was a wiiiise stop! Delicious meal!
We are right now waiting for our ferry to the North Island, on to new adventures!
