PERU – WEEK 6

Cusco

Here’s the main Peruvian tourist hub: Cusco! We were clearly not bothered to go there and had to force ourselves! The city is nice and there’re a lot of historical buildings to visit. However, nothing’s free! Our favourite place there was… a market! San Pedro market is awesome, you can find and eat anything you want! Dozens of food stalls, juice stalls… it’s Heaven if you like eating. We do.

Machu Picchu

Now we had reached Cusco it would have been a shame not to go to the Machu Picchu… It’s a bit of a logistical and organisational effort to get there, but we can’t deny it: it’s worth it. We didn’t content ourselves with the “simple” visit of the site, but also climbed the 1700 steps to the top of the nearby “Montana”, to get a nice viewpoint.

It was quite dreadful to see the contrast between Machu Picchu, one of the 7 Wonders of the World, magnificent archaeological site, and Aguas Calientes, the small town at the bottom of the valley next to it, which is just a “hive” of hotels, European restaurants, bars… The problem is that if you want to see the Machu Picchu, you have to spend at least one night in Aguas Calientes. To see all these tourists so happy to visit this beautiful place and at the same time basking in such a village was a bit appalling, to us.

Back Home

After Cusco, we went back to Lima for a quick stopover before our looooong journey back Home. This time, we decided to go to Miraflores, where all the tourists are. We walked around Kennedy Park, which might be one of the busiest place in Lima, and all we saw were hundreds of persons playing Pokemon Go, really, hundreds of them… scarry! We also had the best kebab of our lives there… not very traditional but Lima is considered by some as the food capital in the World, because of the diversity!

Lima (800x450)

Then, we went on our last but not least bus journey of the trip… to Buenos Aires! Scheduled duration: 65h. It’s kind of hard to describe the excruciating 3 days we spent in this crappy bus: over-loud music, over-loud movies, over-loud stupid music videos, hours waiting at the Chilean and Argentinian borders, hunger, back pain, legs pain, extreme irritation towards the drivers who never gave a s*** about us… but we arrived to Buenos Aires… at 10pm, 75h after we had left Lima (we knew the Peruvian transports were late, but not that much!). Anyway, we had decided we would eat a proper dinner, whatever happens, so we went for it, and after walking in dark suspicious streets, we found a restaurant, where we had a nice steak, in the early morning… That was pretty much our only experience of Argentina, and it’s been a good one.

We finished this trip with a 13h flight to London. We should have been travelling longer but Life is full of hard decisions… Anyway, it’s been a hell of an experience, we’ve been through some of the best and worst times of our lives during these 10 months and possibly came back as different (better?) persons. We’ll see what the future holds for us… one thing sure, we don’t plan on moving in any of the countries we visited. And on that bombshell, thank you for reading us, good night! Wiola and Nico… in UK.
